Have you ever heard those rich pastors in megachurches interpreting this passage in the bible the wrong way;  in the new testament, one ofJesuss’ counsel was “ask and you shall receive”.  Many pastors have interepreted this message mainly by asking God for financial freedom, riches, wealth and the good life while they are still living on earth. If you continue reading the passages you will understand that Jesus was not talking about any of those things but was talking about the reception of the Holy Spirit.

In Luke 11:9-13 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

When you receive the Holy Spirit you will be able to do God’s will from which your rewards will await you abundantly in heaven. Matthew 6:19-21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Jesus said not to worry about materialistic possessions but we have to first and foremost seek the kingdom of God and everything else we need will be given to us. Matthew 6:25-34 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

The last thing you should ask for is wealth because when you are rich, you will be accepted in this world. Not only will you have a good life and the need to fear and depend on God will lose fervor or may not not even exist because for the most part you would most likely depend on your money rather than God. This what the Scripture said regarding wealth and all the things that come with money such as a good life, properity, acceptance of the world, lustfullness and  love of pleasure.

Matthew 19: 23-24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

The Rich man and Lazarus
Luke 16:19-26 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

Most people who have money, the world loves and accepts them.  If you want to belong to Jesus, the world will hate you just for that and it will not welcome nor idolize you.  The people, the world loves cannot belong to Christ.  You must out of this world to receive the kingdom of God, you must deny the  good life in this world before Christ can redeem you.  You must pick up your cross and follow him.  John 15:19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.  Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.  John 12:25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Luke 8:14 And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.

Do not listen to those pastors who are preaching about gaining wealth for it will lead you away from God. If you are looking to be a friend of God then you have to despise the things of these world and you must seek Him first above anything else. He will provide just enough for you to make it through life and you do not need a whole lot of stuff to make it through this short journey of life. Ask for the spirit of God to dwell in you, obey His commandments so that you may have inner peace and  be able to stand in His presence when the final judgment comes and lastly be able to inherit eternal life and live with Him forever.
